Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope

Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope Review

With the Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope, astronomy is made simple by allowing users to find thousands of galaxies, stars, planets and other celestial objects at the touch of a button. You can simply select an object from its menu, and the instrument will find it for you. Using the patented NexStar technology, it can locate nearly 40,000 objects, where all you have to do is look through the eyepiece and then you can enjoy the view.

Like others in the NexStar SE family, this telescope combines the traditional style of orange tube telescopes with cutting-edge features, such as flash upgradeable hand control, fully computerized operating system and superior coatings. Basically, it is a convenient and portable computerized telescope that offers excellent optics and GoTo tracking. Coming with a standard equipment mount and tripod featuring an easy no-tool set-up, it even includes a student version of the Sky planetarium software for PC.

The NexStar 5 SE sports updated premium Starbright XLT optical coatings, which mean that it can constantly deliver crisp, high-contrast views of the planets, moon and other bright deep space objects. With the standard equipment 25mm Plössl eyepiece, this telescope can produce a magnification of 50x, which is powerful enough to show Saturn’s rings, Jupiter’s cloud bands and the Lunar disk’s changing face, though you can use it with additional eyepieces to bring out more detail.

With this telescope’s complete package, you will no longer need star charts or a GPS receiver to operate it. Its SkyAlign procedure is easy to use, with the 2-star and solar-system alignment options being most likely the favorite of experienced observers, as they are even quicker to set up. And as its tripod and mount offer a solid base, you will not have any problem with vibration, even when you focus at high power. Its computerized tracking is very good at easily keeping planets in the field of a high-power eyepiece.

Pros and Cons

Though it is quite heavy, the NexStar 5 SE is a fun and powerful telescope that offers really good optics. However, it is lighter compared to other telescopes that it is portable enough and easy to set up. You just have to extend the tripod’s legs, install and adjust the round bubble level on top, mount the telescope, level the tube, turn it on and you are good to go! As it uses computerized GoTo tracking, the telescope is more ideal for finding objects in the sky and star hopping.

On the other hand, this instrument also has its drawbacks. Though its motor drives work fine, they would produce too much noise, like the components used in the gear train is not of high quality. Another big disadvantage of a computerized telescope is its battery consumption.

All in all, the Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope is an intelligent instrument that will offer you a guided tour of the night sky, teaching you about the celestial objects you will find as you go through. Whether you are a beginner looking for a way to easily explore the night sky or a seasoned astronomer looking for a good portable scope, then this is a good option for you.
